Tarkovskiana is a unique digital collection dedicated to the works of Andrei Tarkovsky and other masters of cinema. The platform brings together rare films, unpublished manuscripts, and lost interviews, becoming an essential cultural treasury for cinema art enthusiasts.
Memory and Vision
Tarkovskiana has its roots in a providential meeting in 2014, when the destinies of two cinema enthusiasts intersected: Nicolae Ghibu, a screenwriter and director with a unique connection to the great Andrei Tarkovsky, and Ionuț Dumitrescu, a visionary producer and director. This collaboration gave birth to an ambitious initiative, aimed at bringing to the forefront of Romanian culture the work and thought of some of the most influential creators of cinematic art.
At the heart of this initiative stands the emblematic figure of Andrei Tarkovsky, whose artistic vision transcends time and space. His words reverberate with a singular profundity: “An artist can be considered your supporter much, much later, when he is already dead, when only his books or films still live. The artist has no instrument to bring him closer to the needs of his fellow men than he already is. He can only trust that God will allow him the possibility to be useful in the end to his fellow men and his nation.” This reflection captures the essence of Tarkovskiana's mission – to preserve and pass on the artistic legacy of the great masters of the screen.
Our project distinguishes itself through its unique focus on the less explored aspects of the cinematic universe. We do not aim to engage in exhaustive critical analyses or hermeneutical interpretations of film works – there are already thousands of pages dedicated to these approaches. Instead, we concentrate on recovering and presenting rare and unprecedented materials, offering the public access to cultural treasures hitherto hidden or forgotten.
One of our most remarkable discoveries was the revelation of an unknown connection between Romania and Andrei Tarkovsky. For 47 years, our country was unaware that it had a compatriot who not only studied alongside the great Russian artist but also conducted an extensive interview with him in Chișinău on August 15, 1967. During this historic conversation, Tarkovsky mentioned for the first time his intention to write a theoretical book about the art of film, introducing the fundamental concept of “modern cinematography as sculpture in time” – an idea that would revolutionize cinematic thinking.
Tarkovskiana, however, is not limited to Tarkovsky's work alone. Our platform embraces the creations of a plethora of visionary directors, many of whom were former colleagues or sources of inspiration for Tarkovsky himself. Among these are legendary names such as Dovzhenko, Bresson, Kurosawa, Antonioni, Bergman, Fellini, Buñuel, Chaplin, Mizoguchi, and Sokurov – each a titan of world cinematography.
In essence, Tarkovskiana is dedicated to the history and memory of art cinema. We believe that this approach represents a fundamental study, perfectly aligned with the profound nature of the art of film. Through our efforts, we hope to open new horizons of understanding and appreciation for this form of artistic expression, inviting the public to discover or rediscover works that have shaped and continue to influence the global cultural landscape.
